4 out of 5 stars A very nice system to keep the gadgets down   August 26, 2010
Edmund Zebrowski (Schaumburg IL)
I got this because like so many other people out there I have an I product. Be it an I-phone or an I-touch. (Me I have the I-touch) I also have a Garmen GPS that is a few years old now and have been wishing there was some way to do this sort of thing on my I-Touch.... well now there is. All the package really gets you is a hands free devise to attach to your window, a charger and a line in for your car if you have a MP3 player jack. (Me I don't) what you REALLY need to get is the App for this on the I-Tunes shop. At the time of me writing this the app was $50 and really not a bad price for what you get. I love the ease of the Tom Tom interface and the way it gives you directions. The voices are clean and easy to understand. I don't have a jack in my car to hook it up to my radio but the little built in speaker worked just fine to get me to where I needed to go. What is nice is that I have one less thing to carry around and it charges my I-touch. So while this package is nice it is not 100% needed for the program to run on your phone/touch

4 out of 5 stars It Does What You Want It To Do   August 26, 2010
Tim Challies (Oakville, Ontario)
The TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch is a pretty basic product and really, I think all you want to know is, "Does it do what it's supposed to do?" And the answer is, yes. It sticks to the windshield of your car and allows you to use your iPod Touch as a GPS system. Do note, of course, that you will need more than the mount for this to work--you will also need the TomTom app from the iTunes store. That is going to set you back $50. At that price, combined with the mounting kit, you're into roughly the same territory as a mid-range dedicated GPS device (which will have a larger screen at the very least). And since those go on sale here at Amazon all the time, I think I'd be likely to hold out for the dedicated device.

Nevertheless, when rating this particular product I can't deny that it does what it's supposed to and it does it well. The question is simply whether it's the best option...

1 out of 5 stars Too many unanswered questions   August 22, 2010
Cybyl
Received a nice looking unit. Following the included instructions, it failed to detect my iPod Touch 3G. A previous review said that this unit should work with 3rd party software (the competing Magellan iPod GPS kit does), so I used the MotionX Drive app. Unit failed to start or make any indication that it we even functional. The only clue was a screen message that said to purchase their $49 GPS app. Called customer support which said that the unit SHOULD work as-is but recommended the $49 GPS software just to make sure. I asked why I should spend an additional $49 for nonrefundable software if neither of us could determine if the unit even worked beyond an on-screen sales pitch. He recommended returning the unit. I asked about returning the software as well if it did not fix the problem. He said to discuss that with the Apple iTunes store (which rarely refunds on app purchases) . Anyway, I opted to get out while the going was good and, to their credit, Amazon refunded me 100% for the unit. This unit is evidently too new to have a history of user experiences as well as distribution to box retailers to even look at physically.

4 out of 5 stars For ITOUCH ONLY and needs another $50 to buy the software   August 17, 2010
Sincerely Yours

This application really helps to consolidate the use of the itouch that we use a lot for general map reading. However, this is not cheap and you have to factor in another $50 to buy the software before you can even use it. That was a slight downer as at that price, it could have come with a basic program.

the software was easy to install and once itouch was clipped into the kit, we did not find it had any more problems in picking up a signal than our tomtom. At least, it is one less piece of gadget to carry around with us. It was easy to use and we would replace the tomtom once that breaks down. if you have an itouch and is also considering a tomtom/other gps device then I can recommend that you just buy this along with the additional software.

The attachment offers two methods: suction pad to your window screen or a sticky pad if you want the placement on a more permanent surface in your car. We recommend the suction pad if you have to consider these factors: multiple drives with different needs, rentals or even multiple cars.

4 out of 5 stars turn your iPod Touch into a top-notch navigator   August 16, 2010
Paul Christensen (West Chester, PA United States)

One of the limitations of the iPod Touch is a lack of built-in GPS. If you're looking for a vehicle-based GPS, then the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch is well worth considering, given a few limitations.

First of all, you'll need to purchase navigation software from the iTunes AppStore - TomTom, Magellan, or my personal favorite (and highest rated) Navigon. Combined with the cost of this Car Kit, you'll still pay less than a standalone GPS unit, without sacrificing capabilities or performance. NOTE: if you don't buy the TomTom Navigator, make sure to download the FREE "TomTom Car Kit tool" app from the iTunes store. It will help you verify that the iPod Touch is properly mounted (more on that below) and will eliminate the warning message otherwise displayed when first connecting.

Like the corresponding TomTom Car Kit for iPhone, the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch is a clever design. It attaches to your windshield (or to the included adhesive-backed mounting plastic disc) with a tightening wheel to activate the suction mount. The iPod Touch docks in the TomTom kit where it is secured in place. Unlike the TomTom Kit for iPhone, there isn't enough tolerance provided to accommodate a case, so you'll have to remove your iPod Touch from any case before mounting. Once mounted, the TomTom Kit lets pivot the iPod Touch horizontally or vertically, and you can slide the position to evenly balance it. Very clever, and very steady even when driving.

Power is provided by a 12-volt adapter (which, nicely, is the same adapter that TomTom uses for their Go units, so spares are reasonably priced and easy to find). But, since the iPod Touch doesn't have built-in GPS, you are limited to using this in your vehicle (this is a limitation of the iPod Touch, not this kit).

Spoken directions are provided by the built-in speaker, which is sufficiently loud (comparable to standalone GPS units), and has a volume control on the mount. There is also a standard stereo audio (headphone) connector for routing to your car stereo, if it has audio-in capabilities. And, most of the iPod/iPhone Navigation software will speak directions over playing music (either by pausing or lowering the music volume to speak directions). But this again is a slight problem (again not a fault of this kit) - if you have connected this Kit to your car stereo, and are also connected by BlueTooth with your phone, you won't hear directions spoken if you're on the phone.

Why not a perfect rating? A few notes:
- the Tom Tom iPod Touch kit doesn't provide enough tolerance for even the slimmest of iPod Touch cases (the iPhone TomTom kit can handle cases)

- like the iPhone kit, I found that the iPod Touch doesn't always "connect" properly the first time - you may get an "unsupported accessory" warning, or just no GPS signal. It's easy enough to correct (just undock and re-dock), and the free TomTom car kit app helps you verify the docking was successful, in addition to showing GPS satellite lock. But I would expect the dock to work all the time. Perhaps this is a problem in the iOS itself (I'm running iOS 4.0.2), but it's nevertheless annoying when it does happen.

- Tom Tom doesn't include an audio cable, which would be nice especially since a right-mounted audio cable works better on this kit for cable clutter and balance

If you can accommodate these limitations, and the iPod Touch-imposed issues, then I would highly recommend the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch. It certainly allows you to consolidate devices (as long as you don't want a GPS you can use outside the car).
